Allergy Season and Naturopathy

April 16, 2014

Do you have nasal congestion making your voice sound like your pinching your nose shut when you talk, eyes itching so badly your tempted to take a brush to them, nose constantly running but your prepared with the wad of tissues in your pocket at all times, sore throat since you’re only breathing through your mouth, a crease in your nose because you’re constantly rubbing it???? Sound familiar?

First of all, the reaction your body has to seasonal allergens is designed for a reason. Your body, being the smart machine that it is, sees the invader (pollen, mold, grass, weeds, etc) and reacts against it with histamine so it can’t over take the body. This natural process is very effective, but unfortunately it can be too effective in some people…

What causes an over active response? Why are you having terrible symptoms to the grass in your yard, but your neighbor isn’t? Because the grass isn’t the cause, it’s only the trigger. The reason for an overactive histamine response lies in over worked adrenal glands, compromised digestion, and a high degree of inflammation in the body. There are other reasons, but these are the most common I see in my practice.

By working to restore healthy functioning of the body, we can start to correct the immune system in it’s over reaction to invaders, which ultimately can stop your dependence on Claritin every season. Allergies are your body’s way of telling you that an imbalance exists, so if you simply try to suppress the symptoms with anti-allergy medication you are ignoring those signs. It is important to listen to these signs your body is trying to tell you to prevent further illness down the road stemming from theses imbalances.

Allergy season is now upon us, so give your histamine secreting cells a break this spring and see your Naturopathic Physician!
